Uses of GGBS. The major use of GGBS is in ready-mixed concrete, and it is utilised in the majority of UK ready-mix deliveries. Specifiers are well aware of the technical benefits, which GGBS imparts to concrete, including Considerable sustainability benefits. Lower early-age temperature rise, reducing the risk of thermal cracking in large pours.
Performance and Sustainability Benefits. Slag cement, like portland cement, is a hydraulic cementit chemically combines with water to set and harden. Because slag cement has a more consistent chemical and physical structure than fly ash, it produces cement paste and concrete with more consistent performance results.

Jul 01, 1996 Evidently the use of slag and fly ash offers benefits with respect to the costs of manufacturing of concrete, because these raw materials are produced as by-prod- ucts or waste materials and can replace purpose-made Portland clinker. The same applies for the effects on the environment of cement and concrete products.
May 05, 2017 According to the Slag Cement Association, some of the quantitative benefits of using slag cement or ground granulated blast-furnace slag in concrete include improved workability and finishability, higher compressive and flexural strengths, improved resistance to aggressive chemicals, improved durability and reduced life cycle costs.
Slag Cement Benefits. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag GGBFS Our slag cement CEMSlag TM is a hydraulic cement material created when granulated blast-furnace slag from the steel manufacturing process is ground to a fineness suited for concrete production.
Slag happens when iron ore is melted. The molten iron sinks to the bottom, while the slag will float on the top of the iron. See the diagram below Another difference between slag and fly ash is that while fly ash will rarely surpass 35 of the cement content, slag can substitute 50 of the cement content, or even higher for different applications.
Oct 03, 2020 GGBS in concrete improves resistance to sulfate attack due to the reduction of Ca OH 2 and lower the C 3 A content. GGBS in concrete reduces the diffusion of chloride ions and hence improves the resistance against corrosion. The total shrinkage of concrete containing ground granulated blast furnace slag GGBS was lower than 100 Portland cement.
